Skyy Infusions Vodka Texas Grapefruit...$11.99 / 750ml

Skyy Infusions Vodka Pacific Blueberry...$11.99 / 750ml

SAN FRANCISCO (JANUARY 8, 2015) — SKYY® Vodka, the number-one premium vodka brand founded and made in the USA, has expanded its innovative, award-winning line of infused vodkas with two new flavors: SKYY Infusions® Texas Grapefruit and SKYY Infusions Pacific Blueberry. Made with natural ingredients, these new infusions blend juicy grapefruit and ripe blueberry with SKYY’s premium distilled vodka, creating two vibrant spirits that are perfect for any cocktailing occasion.

SKYY’s progressive spirit means selecting only the finest natural ingredients to capture the essence of each fruit flavor. Pairing its proprietary, innovative infusions process with one of the juiciest grapefruit varietals, SKYY Infusions Texas Grapefruit has captured the true taste of fruit ripened on the tree until the peak of perfection. The Lone Star State is one of the top producers of grapefruit in the US, known for growing grapefruit that are superior in taste with sweet, red interior. When grown in an environment of hot summer nights, Grapefruit reaches its finest quality, making Texas the perfect place to grow this flavorful citrus. SKYY Infusions Texas Grapefruit delivers a bold flavor that is ideal for the ingredient-driven cocktailing trend.

In recent years, US consumption of fresh blueberries has been on the rise. According to statistics published by the United States Department of Agriculture, per capita consumption of fresh blueberries grew 411 percent from 2000 to 2012. Tapping into the current trend towards natural, infused products, SKYY Infusions Pacific Blueberry has bottled the essence of fresh blueberries and offers smooth vodka bursting with intense, fruit-forward, ripe blueberry aroma and taste. This premium blueberry offering from SKYY captures notes of fresh-picked, flavor-packed berries from prime growing areas of the great Northwest where damp climate and acidic soil make it the perfect setting to grow robust blueberry bushes.

Michel Gahier Arbois

2013 Michel Gahier Arbois Trousseau La Vinge du Louis...$33.99
"My first exposure to the wines of Michel Gahier – another of the many talents whose cellars are in tiny Montigny-les-Arsures – was one of the most exciting experiences of my recent Jura trip." - The Wine Advocate

This vineyard in Montigny has a northeast exposure which requires a harvest later than the other "cru" reds. The vines are forty years old (as of 2011). Gahier likes this cuvée with about four or five years of age to it.

"We fell for the wines of Michel Gahier while dining at the Table de Chaintré, a lovely little bistro in the Maconnais. Yes, not the Jura! But, the young couple running the restaurant had just finished a “stage” at the esteemed restaurant in Arbois “Jean-Paul Jeunet” and brought their love of the Jura wines with them. So, I ordered a bottle of 2005 Trousseau “Grands Vergers” and knew that I had to contact Gahier the next morning.  The Gahier family has been resident in the Jura since 1525. The family domaine is 6.5 hectares with the vineyards concentrated in the village of Montigny-les-Arsures, the place recognized as the home of Trousseau. Michel Gahier has learned from the best. Gahier is a neighbor and friend of Jacques Puffeney, both living in Montigny-les-Arsures, a viticultural district that is acknowledged to produce some of the finest wines of the Arbois appellation. His observations and ongoing dialogue with Puffeney have instilled skills and sensibility that produce undeniably outstanding wines that clearly express the very particular terroir of this corner of the Jura." -- Neal Rosenthal, importer

Great 2012 vintage - Cambria Winery!

2012 Cambria Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard...$17.99
Suggested Retail $25

This single-vineyard selection from the Jackson Family’s Santa Maria Valley winery kicks off with scents ranging from red, blistered tomato to pomegranate reduction and mole sauce. On the palate, flavors vary from sweeter berry to tart cherry, with a savory, roasted pork element rounding out the wine.
Rated 91/100 The Wine Enthusiast

2012 Cambria Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard...$15.99
At first, there’s a slight green herb funkiness of sharp dill on the nose of this single-vineyard offering from the Jackson Family-owned Cambria brand, where Santa Maria native Denise Shurtleff has made the wine since 1999. Once sipped, that evolves into a nice smokiness that sits atop tart green apple and Asian pear.

2012 Chapter 24 Fire + Flood "The Fire" Pinot Noir...$54.99
Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
"Suave and mineral, this wine is blended from vineyard sources representing the volcanic “Fire” soils of the Willamette Valley. It’s more red-fruited than its counterparts, with scents of cherries, cedar, sassafras and forest floor. A tannic component to the texture girds the wine while serving as a springboard, keeping it high-toned and elegant. A long-ager, it will reward the patient"

"This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. White Anchovies!

White Anchovies....$21.99 / lb
White Anchovies from Italy
(sold by the pound in the deli)
White Anchovies are one of those items that customers get upset when we run out of them at the store. We have built a strong following for these little fish. They are marinaded in sunflower oil, wine vinegar, and salt. They are more delicate and less salty than "canned" anchovies. They can be used in a variety of ways: on top of spinach salads, caesar salads, chopped into olive tapenade, pasta salads, or just with good french bread and olives and a glass of crisp white like La Croix Gratiot Picpoul de Pinet wine. They are delicious!

Appetizer made easy....

Take a Tribeca French Baguette (available in our freezer) -- slice and toast it
Spread on the  Artichoke and Caper Spread (available in jars in our store)
Top with White Anchovies (sold bulk in our deli case)
A little black pepper on top

Makes a quick and easy appetizer or snack

Serve with Panarroz GSM from Spain or a nice Albarino like Bouza de Carril Albariño Rias Baixas

Perfectly aged 2009 Bordeaux

When 87 Points is “Perfect”.
2009 Chantemerle Medoc Cru Bourgois...$19.99
Quite often as the wine buyer I rely on a critic's score to help me make my decisions in buying wine for the shop. With over 4,000 wines on hand from $4.49 up to $1000.00, I have not tasted all of them (neither has anyone else) and quite often I am happy to have the help of a critical review to choose which wine to buy and quite frankly to help me sell that wine.  On a recent trip I was reminded how much I like good well aged Bordeaux, honestly who doesn't.  On my way home, working from my phone at the airport I ordered what I thought were 10 cases of a highly rated Bordeaux,  95 Points from one critic at an amazing price. Turns out I should have bought the big IPhone as I misread the name of the Chateau.  After receiving the wine and understanding my mistake we decided to pop and bottle and see what exactly we had. Turns out we have a “Perfect” 87 point wine, the 2009 Chateau Chantemerle,   even in the review - Robert Parker said “Not to be confused with Cantemerle (spelled differently and a classified growth)", which of course is exactly what I did.  The 2009 Chantemerle is a great bottle of Bordeaux from a great vintage that is drinking beautifully right now. This is what an aged Bordeaux should taste like, medium bodied with a great balance of fruit and savory character and again drinking beautifully right now.  There is no need to wait 5 years just enjoy on a random night without any fear of it being too young or not the right moment, you will not be sorry.

2011 Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru...$349.99
Tasting note: An overtly spicy and very earth nose of red currant, plum and wet stone scents. There is lovely richness to the round, full-bodied and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors that exhibit firm tannins on the saline-infused finish. This is excellent and should reward mid to longer-term cellaring.

Rated 91-94/100 Allen Meadows, Burghound

2011 Armand Rousseau Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru...$349.99
Tasting note: In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish.
Rated 89-92/100 Allen Meadows, Burghound

BRC - Side Project Merci Bottle allocation.

7pm tonight is the deadline for picking up bottles of Merci if you got an email allocation.

What will happen to the left over bottles many have been asking?

  • I will allocate bottles to all 4 stores.
  • Bottles will appear randomly on the shelves in the next few weeks.
  • Do not ask for bottles, we will not release them.
  • As always we like to put the left over "gems" on the shelves for people to find.
  • Just a way to support regular shoppers that are in the store.

Thanks very much everyone!
  • There will also be bottles available for on premise consumption at The Side Project Cellar - date to be announced.

Side Projece Merci Blend #1....$29.99 / 750ml
Side Project Merci Blend #1 is blend of Saison du Ble and a 2 year old American Wild Ale

We have been patiently waiting for our first Side Project release.  Looks like the first beer put in barrel by Side Project for The Wine and Cheese Place was back in June 2013 according to my notes!.   Those barrels are still ageing and waiting for the perfect time for release.  We are excited to announce that Cory and Karen King have made a special release for The Wine and Cheese Place (these were not any of our barrels that we supplied).    They are calling it "Merci" for Thank You and we would like to say Thank you to them also for doing this!   It is a pleasure working with them and has been for many years now.  Looking forward to many more releases.

Few limited BRC releases...

We are getting a lot of inquiries about these two...

This one will go through the BRC - will print the report on Monday Feb, 9th.

Firestone Walker Sucaba 2015
A barrel aged English Barley wine. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malt undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut and a touch of dark cherry. A sipping beer best served in a Brandy snifter.

REMEMBER: Watch for bottled on dates located on the necks or bottom left corner of the label for each of our beers. Our Proprietor's Reserve Series, Barrel-aged beers are built to be aged carefully. Storing in a dark place at or below 40F will allow them to best age for several years.

Deschutes "Super Jubel".
We are told this is coming to The Wine and Cheese Place.  Still not here yet, could be a few weeks.  This one will also go through the BRC, at least some of it will be based on Deschutes purchases in the BRC.

Deschutes Jubel 2015
"Super Jubel" was first released in 2010 and was planned on being once a decade release, but the brewery says they could not wait another 5 years and decided to release one this year!

New Anchor Brewing Saison

Anchor Brewing Saison Spring Ale...$8.49 / 6pk
Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly French-speaking region of Belgium. Bière de saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. As brewers, we were drawn to this beer style’s enigmatic history, the freedom it offers, and the creativity it demands.

Anchor Saison™ Spring Ale is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and the Southern Pacific’s “Sunset Route” in 1883, coupled with the advent of refrigerated railcars, made it possible for California brewers and farmers to ship their products out of state. Local artists and lithographers were engaged to create imaginative labels for bottles of beer and crates of fruit. Many of the latter featured colorful vignettes of California scenery framed by mouthwatering images of fresh citrus.

Inspired by those early fruit-crate labels and the ingredients in this release of Anchor Saison™ Spring Ale, our label features an original hand-colored 1873 lithograph of the Golden Gate as seen from Telegraph Hill. Our saison’s California ingredients—hand-drawn by our label artist Jim Stitt—adorn it, creating a uniquely Anchor label for a uniquely Anchor brew.

Malort - Besk

The Wine and Cheese Place - FORSYTH

The Wine and Cheese Place is bringing the "Malort Face" to St. Louis!
We recently introduced Letherbee liquors to our store. I wanted to mention more about one particular product that they make Besk - also know as MALORT

Malort is the Swedish word for Wormwood and of course, Malort originated there. Chicago has been really the only city that has been drinking Malort apparently. It has cult status in Chicago - Malort is their "mascot" or "secret hand shake".

Created by Jeppson and Co., Malort has been in Chicago for a long time. It is only distributed in Chicago. Letherbee initially called theirs Malort, but the name Malort is trademarked by the famous producer Jeppson Malort. The trademark is being disputed by liquor giant Sazerac (sounds like they might have a Malort in the works?)

Letherbee now calls theirs "Besk" which means "bitter".  In stock now at The Wine and Cheese Place in St. Louis!

Including:
  • 3. Malort was one of the few beverages Carl Jeppson could taste. As a cigar shop owner and avid smoker, Jeppson loved drinking and selling Malort, because it was one of the only things his tobacco-ravaged tongue could actually identify.
  • 4. Malort beat Prohibition.  The liquor was sold door-to-door by Jeppson during Prohibition, with the loophole of being medicinal alcohol. Jeppson's Malort was the only legal wormwood product sold in American for 96 years, starting in 1912 and up until 2008, when other wormwood products (like absinthe) became legal.
  • 8. It’s distinctively Chicago’s.  90% of all Jeppson's Malort produced is consumed within Cook County.

Letherbee
BËSK ...$29.99
Letherbee unites with R. Franklinfor a refined rendition of BËSK —a relatively obscure yet locally infamous Swedish liqueur dominated by wormwood. The violently bitter shot initially hits with flavors of grapefruit before an onslaught of wormwood alongside earthy gentian root — an effect that lingers on the palate for quite a surprising while. Beneath the acrid din of the more acute tasting notes rests more gentle traces of juniper, star anise, and elderflower musk. Bottled at 100 proof, Letherbee’s BËSK remains an esoteric shot for adventurous drinkers, but the bitter liqueur can be gracefully incorporated into sophisticated cocktails.

Excellent and rare Tesseron Cognac

From the owners of the famous Bordeaux....Chateau Pontet Canet

Gently push open the door of the Tesseron home in Châteauneuf-sur-Charente to discover the family treasure : a unique collection of the finest cognacs. This treasure trove dates back to the nineteenth century when Abel Tesseron acquired this property and began his collection of rare and priceless cognacs. A tradition continued by his son and grandson Alfred, who runs the business today and who also owns the prestigious Château Pontet-Canet, a Pauillac Classified Growth in 1855.

Abel Tesseron created his own cognac company in 1905, relying at the time on two separate estates, one situated in the Grande Champagne area (Boneuil) and the other in Petite Champagne (Saint-Surin). He adopted a long term policy of building up stocks of eaux-de-vie, carefully conserved in a twelfth century crypt. These old and rare treasures, besides achieving a great reputation amongst a small circle of connoisseurs, have always been sought after by the big cognac merchants, assured of the fine quality of the eaux-de-vie they would use to complete their blends.

Today, thanks to a continual and ever increasing demand, the company is selling more and more of its cognacs under the Tesseron name.

The cognacs within the Tesseron range are specifically labelled as ‘lots’, a term rarely used in Charente. As Alfred Tesseron explains : “These ‘lots’ are, in fact, blends taken from our reserve stocks.”

Tesseron Lot No 29 XO Exception...$529.99
