Fantastic values

We scored some fantastic values from the importer....they are moving into the next vintage and priced these to move. Great values worth buying by the case.

2010 Villa des Anges Merlot...$6.99
"The Villa des Anges 2010 Merlot is softer in feel and lower-key in flavor than its Cabernet counterpart, but its alliance of ripe, admirably fresh plum and dark cherry with hints of chocolate and moss offers plenty of appeal and palate persistence for a less than modest price. Enjoy it over the coming year." -- The Wine Advocate

2009 Alfredo Roca Malbec Merlot....$5.99
The Roca family has been producing wine in Mendoza for 4 generations, and currently farms nearly 260 acres in San Rafael, the southernmost province of Mendoza.  Tasting Notes: Shows a vibrant red color, with aromas of plums and ripe red fruit on the nose. The Malbec’s soft tannins and Merlot’s delicate fruit result in a wine of great intensity, elegance, and balance.   Serve With: An ideal pairing with saucy pasta dishes, pizza, or carne asada.

Bargain Rose....

2011 Villa des Anges Old Vines Rosé...$11.99
"A sleeper selection, Cinsault is often a small component in many Southern Rhone blends, but it also makes fragrant, delicate and intriguing roses. This 100% Cinsault is an incredibly delicate, light-colored rose offering a sensational perfume of spring flowers, cranberries, cherries, earth and flowers. Medium-bodied with good underlying acidity, not a lot of weight or forcefulness, but wonderful delicacy as well as an ethereal quality, this beauty is best consumed over the next six months."
Rated 89/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra...$8.99
"Another incredible value and full-throttle wine made from 100% Grenache, Herencia Altes’s vineyards are situated high on the hillside above the village of Batea, where grapes have been grown since the 15th century. This offering, from very old vines and aged completely in concrete, is a naked, unadulterated, unmanipulated effort with great minerality (from the chalky, limestone soils) and an intensity and richness (from the old vines) that are normally found in $50+ wines. As I told Eric Solomon, at these ridiculously low prices, consumers will never suspect the wines are at this level of quality. This outstanding 2011 offers loads of kirsch, raspberry, licorice, garrigue and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and dense, it is best consumed over the next 2-3 years. A killer value, it is a custom cuvee made for Eric Solomon by proprietor Nuria Altes."
Rated 91/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

"To take up the challenge and make a 100% true Brett beer can very easily become a fatal attraction for the Brewmaster. Ones you get acquainted with Bretts irresistible, seductive, alluring and very charming nature, it will ensnare you and drive you to the point of obsession to create the desirable tangy, funky, tart flavor in ya mouth." - label

Evil Twin The Talented Mr. Orangutan Stout...$11.99 / 500ml
He has proportionally longer arms than others, recognisable by his reddishbrown hair, among the most intelligent primates and uses a variety of really sophisticated tools. But what makes him so gifted and very sought after is his notorious ability to maintain deviously capable, deliver something unpredictable and always perform with a curious mind of a five year old.

Arcadia Rye in CANS!!!!

New CANS!!

Arcadia Sky High Rye....$9.99 / 6pk CANS
"This West Coast-style Pale Ale is brewed with 80% English barley malt and 20% rye malt. It boasts a massive floral aroma of resinous hops, contributing notes of lemons, peaches and pine needles and anchored by sweet, malty flavor of toffee and freshly-baked pumpernickel bread." -- brewery

Sam Adams Barrel Room Collection

Back in stock -- 4 more cases of each

Now also available online

Sam Adams Stony Brook Red...$8.49 / 750ml
This unique brew defies traditional beer style definition. The rich, malty brew combines notes of tart fruit from the yeast with a toasty oak character from the barrel aging. The long dry finish is almost wine-like.This is a beer that is satisfying on its own and also pairs well with many foods such as braised or roasted meats, beef stews and strong salty cheeses.

Sam Adams New World Tripel...$8.49 / 750ml
Pale gold in color, this ale is big, flavorful and complex. A special Belgian yeast strain adds tropical fruit and spice notes to the crisp dry ale, while Saaz hops add a subtle herbal note.

Sam Adams Thirteenth Hour...$8.49 / 750ml
The thirteenth hour is the witching hour and refers to the mysterious combination of flavors in this brew. We've combined the roasted chocolate and coffee flavors of a stout with the spicy character of a Belgian ale aged in oak.

The combination of 7 different malts creates a brilliant black brew that's full bodied and smooth with rich notes of coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits like raisins and plums. The dark roasty, and slightly sweet flavors of a stout are blended with the unique, spicy and sour character of ourKosmic Mother Funk (KMF), an ale that's been aged in oak tuns for up to a year. The KMF gives the beer an added complexity with notes of black pepper, oak, vanilla, and a hint of acidity.

Enjoy this beer now or age it to further develop unique flavors.
We recommend pouring the beer gently into a traditional glass. Take care not to unsettle the fine layer of yeast that rests at the bottom from the bottle-conditioning, a process which creates an extra smooth and balanced flavor in the beer.

Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Deschutes Obsidian Stout....$8.99 / 6 pack
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness. Malt: Pale, Crystal, Carapils, Munich, Black Barley, Roasted Barley, Wheat Hops: Nugget, Millennium, Willamette, Northern Brewer

Schneider Weisse Tap X Cuvee Barrique...$17.99 / 750ml
Wheat Doppelbock 9.5% ABV aged in wine barrels
Collab between Schneider and BFM of Switzerland

"In 2010 Hans-Peter Drexler started a new project maturing some of his finest beers in wine barrels.  He enjoyed the expertise of brewmaster Jerome de Rebetez from Brasserie des Franches Montagnes in Switzerland who grew up in a wine producing family.
Thus, they created delicious new beer aromes.  Mein Barrique Cuvee welcomes you and a fruity nose reminding of fiigs and dried pears.  On the palate you meet cherries, balanced by a hint of vanilla and chocolate and a pleasantly sour and liquorice taste.   A warming well balanced Cuvee with a long, dry finish - just like good red wine." -- Georg VI. Schneider

Fresh batch landed today at Forsyth.
Join us tonight for the Sbragia Wine Tasting from 5-7pm and we will be giving out samples of this amazing Salmon.  We have never offered out samples of the salmon, but thought this special occasion would be the right time!

Smoked Salmon from Ann Arbor, Michigan
Usually the best things we find for our store are products that don't come looking for us, they are products that we go looking for them.  Durham's Tracklements Custom Smoked Provisions is one of those products.  In fact, we have been trying for months to sell their salmon in our store.  They kept telling us that they cannot keep up with demand at this point and they are not taking on any more accounts.  Our begging finally paid off and we our on our 3rd shipment,  Supply is limited.

Durham's Tracklements

Inspired by a stay in the Northwest Highlands and Islands of Scotland, a genuine hand-rubbed dry cure of salt with a bit of brown sugar, lightly smoked over our own blend of select hardwoods. Mellow fresh flavor with moist, firm yet buttery texture

Best of the Best in 20 years of Tasting

" comparison" - Marian Burros, The New York Times

Salmon just doesn’t get any better than this.

Next lowest price on Wine-Searchers is $30.79
Appellation Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, is known  historically as the ‘premier zone’ for wine-growing in  Mendoza. Its high elevation location (3,018 - 3,537 ft), in combination with a semi-desert climate and lownutrient, stony soils provide ideal conditions for cultivation of high quality fruit.  Growing Season Spring arrived in Mendoza with snow still in the vineyards and was followed by frost and winds, leading to a difficult fruit set. Summer started warmer than average with wind and very dry conditions prevailing. From late  February onwards, slightly cooler days and sunny skies yielded perfect ripening conditions. A record one-day rainstorm on March 19 could have been disastrous were it not for the drying windy weather that followed immediately. The 2010 growing season was characterized by the excellent phenolic ripeness  attained at lower Brix levels.

"Black garnet with saturated violet tones on the rim, this showy malbec summons aromas of ripe blackberries, plum skin and red licorice with spicy vanilla overtones. Weighty and smoothly textured on the palate, with dense waves of  red currants, wet stones and rich oak aromatics."

Château/Domaine de Lancyre 2011 Rosé
2011 Chateau Lancyre Coteaux du Languedoc
Rosé Pic St.-Loup...$15.99
"One of the finest roses I tasted in 2012 is Domaine de Lancyre’s 2011 Pic St. Loup Rose. Super-ripe notes of raspberries, garrigue and spice jump from the glass of this solidly constructed blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Cinsault. One does not usually find roses of this quality from the Coteaux du Languedoc, but this 135-acre estate has fashioned a true beauty."
Rated 91/100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate This rosé is plush and rich, filled with flavors of ripe apple, pear and peach that are accented by smoky notes. A spiced melon note lingers on the creamy finish. Drink now. 7,080 cases made.–KM

Lowest price on Wine Searcher is $12.44
"As for the red wines, the 2007 red reveals beautifully sweet tannins as well as a sexy, sensual style. Its pure, kirsch and black fruit notes are offered in a medium-bodied, supple format. The 2007 Cuvee Marina red is a bigger, denser, more tannic and oaky effort, but it does not appear to be any better than the less expensive offering. It is built for a longer life of 3-4 years." -- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Bols Genever Gin

In stock at all locations
I checked our system, last bottle we sold was in 2004 (it was only $12.99 / 750ml back then - 8 years ago)

Bols Genever in the old brown crock was a standard on the shelves of The Wine and Cheese Place for years until it disappeared.  Now it is back with a new look and same old recipe.

Bols Genever Gin...$39.99 liter
Genever is a product category on its own, protected since 2008, meaning it has the equivalent of a French AOC, putting it on par with categories such as Champagne, Cognac, and Scottish malt-whisky. Genever can be made only in Holland and a few nearby areas, from high-quality ingredients.

The heart of Bols Genever is a precious whisky-like triple grain distillate made of corn, wheat, and rye, which the Dutch call maltwine. This flavor-rich distillate is carefully blended with a juniper-berry distillate and brought to 42% alcohol, a percentage carefully chosen by our master distiller for the perfect combination of aroma and mouth feel. The attention to detail in the distilling process is comparable to a fine single malt Scotch.

In the early 19th century, the import of genever was six times bigger than gin and many cocktails that are now made with gin, originally mixed with genever.

Bols Genever is produced by world's oldest distlled spirits company Lucas Bols, that was founded in Amsterdam in 1575. The company began distilling genevers in 1664, a proud tradition that continues to this day. Master distillers perfected the art of distilling genever over centuries in Amsterdam and in 1820 a revolutionary new genever was created. This new recipe is the authentic taste of genever as it should be: complex, powerful, and delicious." - website

Now you can make...
The Original Collins

2 shots Bols Genever
1 shot freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
½ shot sugar syrup
Soda Water
(1 shot = 30ml)

Shake all ingredients and pour in a Collins glass top with the soda water and throw in a lemon wedge (do not squeeze)

The Idea of Grog
Most people do not have a libation based on how a spirit is or is not made. They drink on the taste, the party in the bottle, and the attitude, fun, adventure, and camaraderie that goes with it!  Ours is not a rum, whisky, vodka, or liqueur, but rather a specialty spirit.  The use of grain based alcohol, the distillation steps and processing parameters used to achieve a high quality spirit, the over saturation of the flavored vodka market, and the overall lack of desire for another liqueur on the store shelves and bar backs, drove us to come up with something new.  Grog refers to many different alcoholic beverages throughout the world.
Australia – Grog is any alcoholic beverage Sweden – Common description of drinks not made to a recipe, typically just one kind of spirit, commonly vodka, cognac, or eau de vie, and one kind of non-alcoholic  beverage.    Fiji – Drink made by pounding sun-dried kava root into fine powder and mixing it with water.  Origin according to Wikipedia: Rum and water mixed with limes and given to sailors of the Royal Navy.

Practical translation of the origin: Alcohol of poor quality from various sources (after all, a bunch of drunken sailors didn’t care if their alcohol was derived from sugarcane, grain, or potatoes) then diluted with stagnant water so they had to add citrus to make it palatable.  One would think that with the history and allure of grog, we would find bottles from the domestic market washed up on beaches everywhere.  You cannot find one because there are none!  With the ships of Blackbeard, Bluebeard, and even Captain Jack Sparrow, grog has sailed the world keeping crews together and a wench within arms reach.  A drink for the ages that spans the equator from end to end.  Grog has been made many ways by many a barkeep, but we have stumbled upon a unique recipe from pirates of the Northwest.  We distill to a high quality spirit, dropping out the impurities for a clean, unrivaled taste; we age with charred oak; and we sweeten with blue agave, nectar from the gods themselves.  Ours is an original Grog for Pirates, Playboys, and Partiers alike!  We are the
Party In A Bottle…. With attitude!

Production Notes
Production starts with a high quality neutral grain spirit feed stock. All spirits are treated with a weathered, time-proven, natural process learned while sharing libations with Russian sailors, one of which was the skipper of a nuclear submarine, in the Bering Sea. We’d give you more details, but it’s classified. (Yes, that’s all true. Well at least everything but the information being classified, but we’re still not going to tell you the processing details.)  After initial treatment, the spirits are distilled in a not-so-traditional pot still.  The recovered distillate is then used as the feed for the 3 different products.  Primary distillate is treated with an additional processes learned over the course of 15 years experience in beverage and industrial alcohol production and redistilled for production of Dog Watch Vodka

Fall is here and with it our seasonal ale, Red Hoptober. Shining like autumn leaves in a globe glass this beer pours a dark and lovely garnet as it builds a bright, inviting head. The Eldorado hops are bold and present with a distinct, piney flavor while the caramel malt and roasted barley provide a backbone to stand Red Hoptober upright. Centennial and Cascade hops offer hints of citrus, tickling the nose, while the tongue carries a subtle, roasty tone that pairs pleasantly with the warming bite of bitter. Red Hoptober is perfect for shortening days and campfire nights.

Edinburgh Gin

New from Scotland
Edinburgh Gin....$28.99
"Our Gin starts life in a revered 200 year old Scottish copper pot still, where the finest Scottish grain spirit is distilled in the traditional way, together with the classic gin botanicals, such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, angelica and orris root. What makes Edinburgh Gin so unique and distinctive, are the carefully selected, notoriously soft Scottish botanicals, which are mixed with heather and milk thistle, and added at the final production stage. The gin is finally bottled in Edinburgh at 43% ABV.

"When gin became the fashionable spirit in the nineteenth century, Edinburgh distillers, like their London counterparts, produced a gin which was a direct copy of Dutch jenever to cater for demand. Like the London distillers they had everything they needed arriving in the bustling Port of Leith — sugar, spices, fruit and grain. We hope in a small way to revive Edinburgh's fantastic distilling and liqueur manufacturing legacy and build upon it..."

Dragon's Breath Lump Charcoal....$16.99 / 20lbs
From Missouri
Made from Hickory and Oak
This is one of the top rated and one of the few "Highly Recommended" Lump Charcoals by the Naked Whiz's Lump Charcoal Database

"The charcoal is quite easy light, taking 3 sheets in our chimney starter test. This is low compared to other charcoals. There was very little sparking and no popping while the charcoal burned in the chimney starter. The smoke had the classic smell of American hardwood charcoal.

In our maximum temperature test, the charcoal burned at 980 degrees which ranks very high compared to other charcoals. The fire spreads quickly and there was very little sparking and no popping while the charcoal was burning full tilt. When using a MAPP torch to start the charcoal, we did observer moderate sparking AND popping, so you should exercise care in using a torch to start this charcoal.

Finally, in our burn time test, Dragon Breath burned a very long time ranking Very High compared to other charcoals. In fact, it is one of the longest burning charcoals we've encountered. The ash production was Low compared to other charcoals.

In conclusion, we were very impressed with this charcoal. It is easy to light, has that great American hardwood smell, burns hot, burns long, and produces a low amount of ash.
